Not that my world is so horrible, but I know it will be better upside down and understood by a stranger. It is this desire, to be transformed by understanding, that has pretty much propelled me through every single day since 1996. See you there. –Miranda July
It is essential for your wellbeing to sort out what influences in your life are nourishing and which are depleting. This is not as easy as it seems in a society where it is considered normal for people to eat unhealthy food for the sake of eating, have relationships for the sake of relationships, and purchase many things that they don’t need and barely even want. Since that is the cultural standard, it’s necessary to take the time to figure out whether something you take in- be it food, entertainment, information, family influences, or emotional contact- actually sustains you. It would be worthwhile to consider this question in the context of any sexual influences as well. I think the concept of “addiction” is overused and misunderstood, but it begins to have meaning when there is the quality of some influence potentially controlling your life. If during the next few weeks you find yourself at a full stop, or feel like you can no longer effectively negotiate with yourself, that’s the time to take some time and inquire about the issue of control. There is often an associated issue about whether you want the responsibility implied by self-determination. The most common reason I’ve seen people abandon their power is because it seems to offer liberation from the consequences of their own mistakes. That’s one form of liberation that will never serve you.
To be, or not to be, that is the question—
Whether 'tis Nobler in the mind to suffer
The Slings and Arrows of outrageous Fortune,
Or to take Arms against a Sea of troubles,
And by opposing end them? To die, to sleep—
No more; and by a sleep, to say we end
The Heart-ache, and the thousand Natural shocks
That Flesh is heir to? 'Tis a consummation
Devoutly to be wished. To die, to sleep,
To sleep, perchance to Dream; Aye, there's the rub,
For in that sleep of death, what dreams may come,
When we have shuffled off this mortal coil,
Must give us pause. There's the respect
That makes Calamity of so long life:
For who would bear the Whips and Scorns of time,
The Oppressor's wrong, the proud man's Contumely,
The pangs of despised Love, the Law’s delay,
The insolence of Office, and the Spurns
That patient merit of the unworthy takes,
When he himself might his Quietus make
With a bare Bodkin? Who would these Fardels bear,
To grunt and sweat under a weary life,
But that the dread of something after death,
The undiscovered Country, from whose bourn
No Traveler returns, Puzzles the will,
And makes us rather bear those ills we have,
Than fly to others that we know not of.
Thus Conscience does make Cowards of us all,
And thus the Native hue of Resolution
Is sicklied o'er, with the pale cast of Thought,
And enterprises of great pitch and moment,
With this regard their Currents turn awry,
And lose the name of Action. Soft you now,
The fair Ophelia. Nymph, in all thy Orisons
Be thou all my sins remembered.

The world doesn’t owe you anything, you owe the world something. So stop daydreaming and start DOING. Develop a backbone, not a wishbone. Take full responsibility for your life- take control. You are important and you are needed. It’s too late to sit around and wait for somebody to do something someday. Someday is now. The somebody the world needs is you!

5-step approach to recharging in a hurry:
Cross-training: regularly shift your activities, example- work on a blog post, answer emails, highlight a scholarly article- keep changing what you’re doing so that you don’t have a chance to get boraed and burn out.
Interval training: alternating high-intensity exercise with conscious rest periods. 20 minutes concentrating on an activity and 5 minutes rest.
Regular exercise: during my 5 minute “rest” periods during my day, I do quick sets of exercises, these can be anything from sit-ups to running in place to complete 7-minute callisthenic workout. If you stick to this routine, you’ll get more than your daily allowance of exercise and break up your day.
Sleep when you need it: Whenever I am tired, and I don’t have a pressing emergency, I simply lie down for 10-15 minute nap. Sometimes I’ll take two or more naps if I’m feeling run down. It takes far less time than running to Starbucks with far greater results.

Secrets to better sleep-
Enjoy your faces wisely-one or two cups of coffee in the morning with food in the sunlight which produces serotonin and makes you need less caffeine, cut out caffeine after 2pm because it stays in the system between 8-10 hours.espresso drinces contain about 80 miligrams of caffeine as opposed to coffee’s 140 per serving, green tea has about 25 milligrams per cup and contains L-theanine a calming substance that modulate the effects of the caffeine. Decaf has about 5 milligrams caffeine. Alcohol- earlier is better and with food, drinking late helps you to fall asleep but turns into a stimulant and will wake you up, for each drink put an hour beterrn it and sleep, it takes one hour for the body to metabolize the alcohol, darker wines and liquors seem to have a more of an effect than lighter ones. Nicotine is a stimulant. Go easy on fatty foods.
Shift gears- give yourself an hour to wind down, a hot bath relaxes your muscles, raises your core temp. and when you get out and your temp drops it produces melatonin, lavender oil, lower the temperature in the house, gentle yoga and breathing exercises, light reading or a little TV, Seinfeld style lightness, if you watch TV wear blueblocker glasses, lowlights.com, the TV and computer emit a lot of blue light, the same wavelength that makes the sky blue, it suppresses melatonin.
Lights Out- The darker the bedroom the better for maintaining crucial melatonin levels. Blackout shades, eyemask. Doing the math to relax doesn’t help.
Breath- 4-7-8 breath- place the tip of your tongue against the ridge behind your upper front teeth, breath in through your nose to the count of four, hold your breath to the count of seven, then count out to eight through your mouth, repeat three times.
Don’t rely on meds- If nothing has worked get out of bed and do something relaxing, that is the core of behavioral treatment for insomnia. See a certified behavioral sleep specialist.

IF
If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,
And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise:
If you can dream—and not make dreams your master;
If you can think—and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools:
If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: “Hold on!”
If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings—nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
And—which is more—you’ll be a Man, my son!

I am specifically working on a project that explores showing-and-telling between strangers. You may have heard me say (often) this year, “there are no rules in America.” What I mean is that when you are speaking to another human, the only limits to your interaction are the limits that you allow yourself to follow. It’s hard to break the “rules” that stop us from being honest with one another. –I think this was Ariel
I’m getting older. So it everyone. As we age, more and more outside forces work their way into our lives. They tax us without representation. They tax us_with_representation. We are ruled by events we do not control.
At the same time we are enslaved by our own thoughts and habits, formed in innocence but lashed to us over time with unbreakable chains. As we endure tyranny without, our own tyrannical expectations, vices and prejudices ensnare us from within.
If you hold these truths to be self-evident, come to my Declaration of Independence birthday party on Friday, July 6. On a table somewhere will be our document, where everyone can declare independence from whatever is interfering with their life, liberty or pursuit of happiness. Towards the end of the party, we’ll sign it and “send it to the King of England” (which hopefully means burn the sucker if I can figure out where). –Dave Eisenstadter
