Contemporary novels often cross history without being historical, and collapse time and space without a corresponding shift in point of view. Has a new genre emerged? How does the use of history in contemporary literature reflect popular attitudes toward current political and economic events? And how—if at all—does this tendency bear on the way in which publishing itself is fast-becoming historical?
