Michael Asher -
being among the patron saints of the Conceptual Art phylum known as institutional critique, an often esoteric dissection of the assumptions that govern how we perceive art. ///////////////////////////////
Mr. Asher’s work takes the fear factor out of institutional critique, an intimidating term that tends to separate hard-core art reformers from the rest of us. The goal of such thinkers is to wrench us from the supposedly mindless sedation of portable saleable artworks and mere beauty, and to expose the social, political, economic, architectural and psychological factors, unseen and unconsidered, that influence us when we look at art. //////////////////
Mr. Asher’s pieces usually have a strong pleasure component and a fierce, efficient clarity, whether conceptual or experiential. His emphasis on light and space reflects his lifelong residency not only in Los Angeles but also in the Los Angeles art world. His mother was a museum curator and art dealer; he came of age around the Minimalist environments of light-and-space artists like Robert Irwin and Doug Wheeler.
